CROPP Dairy Program Herd Health Inputs

The following list of materials and their status are CROPP’s own production standards. They may be in conflict with your certification program, but all milk in the CROPP Dairy Program must satisfy these standards. All materials must be used in accordance with all Federal and State Requirements and the National Organic Program.

Antibiotics (Note: CROPP Standards are stricter than the USDA Standards)

  1. Prohibited.
  2. Any cows treated with antibiotics cannot return to organic milk production. Treatment with antibiotics eliminates an animal from organic meat production. Producers must not withold antibiotic treatment.
  3. Prohibited in calves of any age.

Hormones

  1. Prohibited- rBGH/rBST, Breeding, Growth and production hormones, including oxytocin.

Probiotics

  1. Are allowed if documented non-GMO (genetically engineered organism).

Homeopathic, Botanical, Herbal Tinctures, Essential Oils (plant), Aloe Remedies

  1. All are allowed, but thoroughly check with your certification agency the product’s list of ingredients for prohibited materials.

Vaccinations

  1. All are allowed. Check with a local veterinarian for special regional recommendations.
  2. CROPP doesn’t require brucellosis (Bang’s) vaccination, but requires milk testing upon entering program.
  3. Mastitis vaccinations are allowed.

Other Allowed Herd Health Materials

  1. Aspirin to reduce inflammation, fevers.
  2. Synthetic Vitamins and minerals per NOP National List.
  3. Cal/Mag/Phos Milk Fever Treatment, oral/intravenous.
  4. Electrolytes, without antibiotics.
  5. Whey Colostrum Antibodies, BGH-free.
  6. Alcohol (as a disinfectant), prohibited as a feed additive.
  7. Iodine, as a topical, teat dip, external disinfectant, intrauterine bolus.
  8. Chlorohexidine as teat dip (i.e. insufficient results with iodine products)
  9. Copper/Zinc Sulfate as foot disinfectant.
  10. Glucose
  11. Apple Cider Vinegar, certified organic only.
  12. Hydrogen Peroxide
  13. Saline Solution
  14. Milk Replacers: From certified organic sources only. Whole milk is preferred.

Parasiticides
Internal

  1. Allowed
    1. Diatomaceous Earth
    2. Herbal/Botanical
    3. Homeopathic
  2. Prohibited
    1. Ivermectin/systemic parasiticides for 1 year prior to organic milk production.
    2. Not allowed for animals to be sold as organic meat.

External

    • Allowed
    1. Essential Oils, citrus, eucalyptus, citronella, melaluca.
    2. Soaps
    3. Diatomaceous Earth
    4. Homeopathic/Botanical
    • Pour-on systemic louse/worm/grub treatment is prohibited.
